Hurdle ready to tackle new responsibility

Well known for his success as the captain of the national rugby squad, Derek (Bobby) Hurdle has another accomplishment under his belt - becoming the Governor's new aide de camp.

Educated at St. Mary's University, where he earned his Bachelor of Commerce degree, Captain Hurdle said his love for the Regiment led him to where he is today.

Drafted into the Regiment in 1998, he said he and several friends enjoyed performing their duties and decided that they would aspire to move up the ranks.

By 1999, he was a Lance Corporal in the recruitment camp, and subsequently undertook military training in England. Soon after completing his course, he became a Lieutenant.

Mr. Hurdle said working with new recruits was one of the highlights of his military career: "I liked teaching guys how to become effective soldiers."

Since September 9, the 30-year-old has been getting accustomed to his role as Sir John Vereker's right-hand man.

He has an array of responsibilities which includes being in charge of all protocol issues, assisting Sir John with all preparations, as well as running and maintaining Government House.

Mr. Hurdle said although Sir John was off the Island during his first week on the job, he has been busy assimilating in his new work environment.

"It's a steep learning curve," he said.

And while Mr. Hurdle said that one day in the future he hopes to work for the Ministry of Tourism, his priority right now is on the present.

"I'm just concentrating on doing the best on the job."
