ILO trip could help worker relations ? Horton
A sizeable delegation from Bermuda that travelled to Geneva to attend the 95th session of the International Labour Organisation has come back with greater understanding and insights that should assist in the maintaining of good worker-employer relations for the Island.
That was Home Affairs Minister Randy Horton?s view as he informed Parliament of the trip to Switzerland by himself and a party that included representatives of the Bermuda Trade Union Congress, the Bermuda Industrial Union, and the Bermuda Employers Council among others.
?As always the Bermuda delegation was comprised of representatives of worker groups, employers and Government,? said the Minister.
?This year?s delegation was, I believe, the largest ever, and it is my hope that the camaraderie and mutual respect that united the delegation whilst in Geneva will characterise the industrial relations scene here in Bermuda during the days and years ahead.?
He said the delegation had met with participants from across the world individually and in group sessions.
One of the most memorable moments had been hearing a speech from Africa?s first female elected head of state Liberia?s Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, who had spoken of her country?s struggle and toil towards peace and national renewal, said Mr. Horton.
He added: ?For those of us in the Bermuda delegation it heightened our appreciation of the strong economic and social environment in which we are privileged to live; it also strengthened our resolve as social partners to continue to work collaboratively in the best interests of our Island community.?
During the sessions the Bermuda delegation, which had been accorded ?observer? status, met with the British delegation and those from Caricom. Mr. Horton told MPs: ?I believe that my attendance at the 95th session of the ILO and the attendance of the remaining members of the Bermuda delegation proved to be of considerable benefit.?
