Island trained teachers are top of the class

It was a step in the right direction for Bermuda over the weekend when the first ever Island-trained teachers received their qualifications to allow them to take up positions in primary schools.

The 25 men and women were officially welcomed into the fold by Education and Development Minister Paula Cox and Education permanent secretary Michelle Khaldun at a ceremony at Ocean View Golf Club on Saturday.

The graduates began the year-long part-time course at Bermuda College last August, and had to undergo a variety of teacher training courses to pass the final exam.

But a large part of the course was also working as student teachers for several weeks in primary schools around the Island, under the supervision of qualified teachers.

More than 35 people started out on the course last year, but some dropped out, while others did not make it.

The course, entitled Teachers as Scholars, was designed to enable those people already in work but who wanted to retrain as teachers, or those who could not afford to go to college overseas, to realise their dreams.

The Ministry hoped, also, that providing a training course on the Island would help to meet the shortfall in qualified primary school teachers.

A course is also planned at the college for the training of secondary school teachers.

The second teacher training course will begin this August, but limited spaces are available.

To be eligible, people must already have a college degree.
