Law firm plans to renovate Hamilton building

A plan has been drawn up to keep a traditional stone Bermuda building near the centre of Hamilton and "wrap" a new glass-faced five-storey office block around it on two sides.

The two-storey office of Trott & Duncan law firm, on the corner of Dundonald and Brunswick Streets, is to be retained as it stands, but in plans submitted for consideration by the Development Applications Board, the car park area to the side and rear of the building will be built upon to create a 99ft-high commercial office block.

If approved, the new office complex will be linked on the ground and first floor with the present Meridian House building used by Trott & Duncan. The barristers and attorneys-at-law business will continue to use Meridian House and also expand into the ground and first floor of the new block.

The second, third and fourth floors of the fully-glazed office complex will be leased out.

As the new building would fall with the view corridor of the Cathedral it is subject to height restrictions. It's maximum elevation of 99.17ft is well below the restriction of 138ft that would apply to a building at this location in Hamilton.

In an application submission by Bothelho Wood Architects it is noted that the massing and overall height of the project is in keeping with proposed buildings currently under construction within the immediate surrounding city block area of Dundonald Street, Brunswick Street, Cedar Avenue, and Victoria Street.
