Lister told: Sack college board
Senators clashed on the issue of Bermuda College with the Opposition's calling for Education Minister Terry Lister to sack the entire board.
During the motion to adjourn Sen. Santucci revealed he had applied for the post of college President and been interviewed by three people only to find the actual number of people on the interview panel was eight.
Such a process made it impossible for those interviewed by the three to impress those they hadn't met, said Rev. Santucci.
"The Minister of Education should terminate the board," said Rev. Santucci as he called for a review of hiring practices.
He said parliamentary questions in the House of Assembly had revealed the panel consisted of eight members.
The Bermudians applying for the post had been interviewed by the smaller panel said Rev. Santucci, giving an unfair advantage to the foreign candidates.
Government Senator and Bermuda College Chairman said the institution was doing an excellent job and said if Sen. Santucci had a grudge the Senate was not the place to take it up.
He attacked Press coverage about new college President Charles Green's last post.
He said Dr. Green had not been fired but had resigned because of a meddling board ? something which his successor did too. hit back at Rev. Santucci's claim that black males were not valued in the institution and reeled of a list of department heads who fitted that category.
He said there was an "unnecessary reverberation of mis-facts through the community".
Senate President also said it was time to lay off attacking the college which he said was doing an excellent job.
"I want to get off the college bashing because it filters down and impacts the students."
During the motion to adjourn Opposition Senate Leader attacked the Government's plan to slash funding for the Salvation Army.
He said Government could afford $40,000 for newspaper adverts plugging GPS and $200,000 for Government travel but could not find money to support the charity which did such service for the country.
