Local pipe band get honoured invite
The Bermuda Regiment Band is not the only one which will be waving the flag for the Island at a tattoo this summer. The Bermuda Islands Pipe Band has been invited to perform in the Nova Scotia International Tattoo from June 29 to July 7.
The annual event, often referred to as "Canada's best-kept secret", will celebrate its silver jubilee this year, and record attendance is expected.
Although the Bermuda Islands Pipe Band participated in the 'Tunes of Glory' parade of massed bands last year in New York City, it regards inclusion in the Nova Scotia tattoo as its highest honour.
"It is the biggest and most prestigious event we have ever participated in our 48-year history," bass drummer and tour coordinator Adrian Cook said.
The pipe band unsuccessfully auditioned for inclusion in this year's Edinburgh Tattoo, but turned disappointment to delight when Mr. Cook put the word out elsewhere, and was duly contacted by freelance senior drum major Norman McKenzie, who was eager to offer the Bermudians a berth at the Nova Scotia Tattoo. There, the Bermuda Islands Pipe Band will join and international gathering of hundreds of pipers and drummers in forming the tattoo's massed pipes and drums.
"Nova Scotia and Bermuda have a close historical association and we are delighted to have Bermuda represented again in the show," Tattoo producer/director Ian Fraser said.
In addition to the massed bands, pipes and drums, the Tattoo features dancers, choirs, acrobats, comedians, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, military displays and competitions, and much more.
The 17-strong local contingent, whose uniform is the Gordon Highlanders tartan kilt with white jacket, will have a week of rehearsals in Canada prior to the nine nights of performance.
"I am very excited about our participation," Mr. Cook said.
While the Department of Tourism has signalled its support for the pipe band, the drummer noted that it needs to raise $12,000, so he is currently soliciting sponsorship from the corporate world and others.
The Nova Scotia International Tattoo is billed as a "cultural extravaganza" and features a cast of 2000 military and civilian performers. The United Kingdom, The Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, Estonia and Russia are the other countries joining Bermuda and Canada in the silver jubilee event.
