Man charged with committing multiple break-ins

A man faced 11 counts of breaking and entering into businesses and stealing more than $3,500 of cash, liquor and cigarettes when he appeared in Magistrates' Court on Monday.

Craig Wilhelm Stapff, 40, of Ridgeway Road, Pembroke, was not required to enter a plea as the charges are indictable and will be dealt with in the Supreme Court.

He was charged with:

Breaking into the Bermuda Bridge Club between June 26 and 27 this year and stealing liquor and cash worth $90, and then breaking into the same premises again on July 27 and taking nine bottles of liquor and two chocolate bars worth $245.

Breaking into the A1-Market, owned by The Market Place, in Paget on August 1 and stealing 12 bottles of liquor worth $318, and then again on August 3, when he is alleged to have stolen 20 bottles of alcohol valued at $421.30.

Breaking into the Bermuda Athletic Association between September 5 and 6 and making off with $700, before going back between September 17 and 18 and stealing $100.

The court heard allegations that Stapff returned to the A1-Market in Paget on September 20 and stole liquor and cigarettes to the value of $100, and the following day stole $11 from the Bermuda Athletic Association.

The A1-Market was the target again, the court heard, on September 23 when a haul of liquor and cigarettes worth $1,265.50 were stolen.

Stapff is accused of going back to the Bermuda Athletic Association on September 28 and stealing $300 in cash.

And on a day unknown in September, Stapff is accused of attempting to break into the Bermuda Bridge Club again, with intent to steal.

He was remanded in custody until the next court hearing next Wednesday, October 15.
