Man convicted under new car theft law
A Pembroke man has become the first person in Bermuda to be convicted on indictment of aggravated vehicle taking.
When he appeared in the Supreme Court, Marcel Rubaine, 28, admitted taking a car without the permission of its owner, driving it in a dangerous manner and as a consequence damaging two Police cars and injuring a Police officer on May 11 this year.
He also pleaded guilty to assaulting and causing actual bodily harm to a woman the same day and also to using threatening words when he shouted: ?I?m going to kill you and your daughter.?
And facing a fourth charge, Rubaine, of Secret Lane, admitted being in possession of an offensive weapon, namely a hammer, at the Mid Atlantic Wellness Institute on May 12.
Crown counsel Cindy Clark said two psychiatrists reports were being prepared on Rubaine?s mental condition.
Defence lawyer Ricky Woolridge told Chief Justice Richard Ground that Rubaine had acknowledged ?he needs help and wants help? and that the offences committed in May were evidence of this need for help.
Mr. Justice Ground adjourned sentencing and remanded Rubaine in custody while the psychiatrists? reports and a social services report are prepared.
