Man dies in crash

Mourners gathered outside Dandy Town Football Club yesterday morning near the spot where their friend Dion Woodley had a fatal motorbike accident hours earlier.

And colleagues at Butterfield and Vallis are planning a scholarship fund in memory of the popular and conscientious co-worker.

Mr. Woodley, 22, had been travelling west on St. John?s Road between two other bikers at 1.30 a.m. when he lost control of his bike while taking a right-hand bend near the club and struck a utility pole.

He suffered serious head injuries and was rushed to hospital but died soon after.

Keisha Simons was at the scene to pay her respects.

She said: ?He was a nice guy ? a joker. Always happy and smiling. He liked children.?

Mr. Woodley had been working at Butterfield and Vallis for more than a year as a supervisor to save money to go back to college in Atlanta to study computers.

Alun Hughes, general manager of Butterfield and Vallis? food division, said Mr. Woodley had told him only the day before he died that he had received confirmation he would be beginning his studies in January.

?As you can imagine everyone here is more than a little subdued. He was a very popular young man and a very nice kid. It?s tragic.

?He was very mature for his age with his head switched on and his feet well grounded, he was an impressive young man.

?Sometimes you see and hear of things happening on Bermuda?s roads but Dion was a real shock to us.

?The guys in the warehouse instinctively initiated a scholarship fund in his memory.

?We have spoken to his mother today to see if we can initiate some sort of memorial to help other kids go to school.?

Another friend remembered Mr. Woodley as a good footballer who had played for Devonshire Colts.

He said: ?He was a really safe guy who liked to joke around.?

His uncle Sinclair Woodley remembered his nephew as a ?quiet little fellow and a very nice lad,? however other family members were too upset to talk.

Police are appealing for witnesses to call P.c. David Ward on 299 4302.
