Man fined after falling asleep at school

A "street man" was fined $500 for allegedly falling asleep with a young lady in the Purvis Primary School library last month.

Colston McKenzie, 22, of Middle Town Lane in Pembroke, pleaded guilty to trespassing yesterday in Magistrates' Court and told Acting Senior Magistrate Carlisle Greaves that he and the girl who was found with him, ran into the school seeking shelter from the rain on September 21.

The following morning when the school secretary, was opening the school, she found the couple as McKenzie was putting his shirt on, said Crown counsel Shade Subair.

He told Mr. Greaves that he and girl had had a few drinks the night before, were sitting on a nearby bench talking and ran into the gym when it started raining.

"We just fell asleep," he said.

When asked why he was found putting his shirt back on, Mackenzie said: "I sleep with my shirt off."

Ms Subair told the court that while the complainant was calling the Police, McKenzie and the girl ran off. We was caught last Thursday and has been in custody ever since.

Mr. Greaves called Mackenzie a "street man", noting the rash small incidents on McKenzie's record including falling asleep on the Bermuda High School Field, making false statements to Police and missing Regimental duties.

Ms Subair said the couple gained entry to the property through a sliding-glass door with a broken lock.

When Mr. Greaves revealed that McKenzie had an outstanding $250 fine to be paid, McKenzie begged not to be sent to jail, saying: "I hate jail, I hate it."

Mackenzie was ordered to pay the $250 immediately.
