Medical radiation scholarship awarded
The first ever scholarship for students studying medical radiation was granted yesterday by the TB Cancer & Health Association.
The scholarship, worth $15,000, was given to Roche Wolffe. Ms Wolffe is currently studying in Boston. She is pursuing Diagnostic Medical Sonography at Bunker Hill Community College. In her first year she obtained a grade point average of 3.7. The director of her programme praised her and said she was "a strong student with great potential".
The aim of the scholarship is to encourage Bermudians to enter medical radiation sciences. This will help ensure that there will continue to be trained Bermudians to undertake health care screening. Medical radiation professionals are trained in the use of X-rays, CT-scans, MRI machines and radiation therapies.
The funds were raised through events organised by Schroders Bermuda, including the TB & Health Association Charity Golf Classic. The event is held every September and was started in 2003.
"Only through the ongoing partnership and support of Schroders Bermuda, the business community and the public are we able to fund this scholarship," President Judy Simons said. "We strong believe that the youth of Bermuda are our most precious resource.
"By investing in young Bermudians through education it will enable them to contribute to and benefit from the Association's ongoing pledge to excellence in health care prevention."
