Works and Engineering and Housing Minister David Burch will be helping today?s clean up of the Cedar Park area in Prospect and has also pledged to bring tougher laws to help stamp out the problem.

He pledged to muck in with the clean-up after saying the Prospect Housing estates is one of the many heavily dumped on areas around the Island.

Senator Burch, who toured the area yesterday, said: ?We have received numerous complaints from the Dame Marjorie Bean Hope Academy about trash being dropped over the cliff into the children?s playground.

?The Ministry has joined with Keep Bermuda Beautiful (KBB) to address this issue, and W&E trucks and crews will be on hand tomorrow to haul away the debris.

?We will continue to exploit our partnership with KBB to execute other clean ups across the Island. ?I will be doing my part to assist tomorrow morning and I want to encourage the public to come out this weekend and lend their assistance as well.?

He said a committee would be formed to hammer out solutions for dumping by commercial waste haulers and residents and irresponsible waste management by householders.

?We have had initial meetings with Government and public sector stakeholders to address this issue.

?The next step will be to cast a larger net and form a steering committee to ensure that solutions discussed are put into place and enacted.

Proposals include introducing a container bill to decrease litter from beverage and take away containers, more education for the public and waste haulers and introducing waste hauler licences. He also said existing laws would be tightened to crack down on the problem.
