Ministry, teachers to send aid to Caribbean

The Bermuda Ministry of Education and Development and the Bermuda Union of Teachers (BUT) have joined forces in regenerating support efforts in Grenada and Guyana with a donation of $15,000 worth of school supplies to children in one of the devastated countries.

The Bermuda Union of Teachers (BUT) felt that the devastating tsunamis in South East Asia shifted relief efforts from Guyana and Grenada, both of which had suffered tremendous losses after Hurricane Ivan.

The school supplies will be send to schools Grenada which were so badly damaged after Hurricane Ivan that children are now being taught in tented schools.

Education spokesperson, Ginea Wolf said yesterday that as Bermuda is an associated member of the Caribbean Community and Common Market (CARICOM), it was felt that efforts to support Grenada and Guyana should be revived.

She said as part of this initiative, the BUT declared Friday to be the day to regenerate support efforts.

"All teachers have been asked to wear burgundy and grey, which are the BUT union colours and principals have been asked to give students a grub day, while the Minister of Education and Development will be holding a denim day," she said.

Money raised from these events will go towards the Grenada and Guyana support fund. The Bermuda Regiment will be delivering the school supplies on March 5.
