Mother of 12 honoured

A mother of twelve from St. John's Road in Pembroke has been named “mother of the year” in connection with today's celebrations of the International Day of the Family by The Physical Abuse Centre.

Lois Weeks said she was surprised by the honour.

“I thought she (June Augustus) had made a mistake. I didn't feel that I had done anything special.”

The humble mother said she did not understand what all the fuss was about her raising twelve children.

“What I've done is what I'm supposed to do - be a parent.”

Centre Chairperson June Augustus praised Mrs. Weeks for being a role model, not only to her children, but also in the community.

She said Mrs. Weeks was an excellent recipient for the award.

“Mrs. Weeks deserves this as it is wonderful that she has successfully raised her children.”

Gifts will be presented to Mrs. Weeks at noon today at the Centre, located on Mount Hill in Pembroke.

Along with an Angel award, a gift basket and a floral arrangement, Mrs. Weeks will be given a surprise gift from the Centre.

In addition to the ceremony, the Centre will be holding an open house from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today. Families in need are encouraged to come and select free items of clothing and household goods.
