Another young man is fighting for his life in hospital after an accident on Bermuda's roads.

The 25-year-old from Pembroke lost control of his motorcycle and crashed into a fence in Happy Valley Road, Pembroke, near the junction with Tribe Road #1 at 3.15 a.m. yesterday, (FRI) the first day of Road Safety Week.

He suffered serious head injuries and was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital by ambulance. Yesterday, he was in the Intensive Care Unit, where his condition was described as critical but stable. Police say the bike was extensively damaged in the incident.

On Monday, officers said the past week had claimed more accident victims than any other in recent history, with Kelvin Quarles, Charles Everett and Kitina Simmons all losing their lives with a five-day spell.

Shortly after Ms Simmons' death — the seventh fatal road accident casualty already in 2008 — Police met with the Road Safety Council. Council chairman Christopher Johnson appealed to motorists to take extra care, saying: "We are urging everyone to be more cautious, especially on rainy days like these, and to be aware that we have seven deaths this year and so are well ahead, statistically.

"There are a number of factors to be mindful of, but the most important one is not to drink-drive and also, to watch your speed. We are appealing to motorists and to people on bikes to be more aware of this."

Witnesses to the Happy Valley Road accident or anyone with any information should contact P.c. Derek Simmons on 295-0011.
