MP calls for change in school zones
Shadow Minister Suzann Holshouser is calling for the Education Ministry to introduce five zones for primary schools instead of the current three.
Mrs. Holshouser, who was speaking in relation to the proposed closure of one Primary One class at St. George?s Prep, said primary schools should be bought on par with the Middle Schools.
Currently parents of primary school children apply to send children to schools in a western, central or eastern zone depending on where they live.
At the middle school level, groups of primary school send their students to one of the five middle schools.
Some of the parents who applied to send their children to St. George?s Prep now face the possibility of their being placed outside of St. George?s Parish.
?Perhaps to avoid this problem in the future, the Department of Education should look at rezoning the Primary School system from three zones to five zones, as is the situation for Middle Schools,? said Mrs. Holshouser.
?This would narrow down the choices and keep the children in their community schools.?
Parent Nick Duffy said:?It does seem to make a lot of sense where the children are concerned, as the youngest will be forced to travel.?
