MP calls for major education reforms

Government backbencher Wayne Perinchief has attacked his own party for failing to implement radical education plans.

He lamented the Progressive Labour Party had stuck with comprehensive schooling which he said had not worked here or abroad.

He told the House of Assembly on Friday: ?It failed in England and it failed in America yet we took it up, this Government embraced it, this Government cannot abrogate itself from responsibility.

?We basically failed because we built Berkeley. I happen to be the first to say that.

?The other side accuse the backbench of being too neutral, too neutered. Let?s say this ? this backbencher has not been neutered.?

He said previous education studies had called for three senior schools but instead there were two.

?Teachers should not be blamed for the dilemma they find themselves in. The bane of education has always been politics and politicians.

?These systems are created by political agendas set by the government in power.?

He spoke after several MPs had spoke out about literacy problems.

He said ?social promotion?, He said ?social promotion?, the process in which students are moved up levels even if their grades don?t warrant it, had been started under the United Bermuda Party.

But he said that was no excuse for his Government to continue it.

The same held with the handling of Bermuda College, said Mr. Perinchief.

He said just because the PLP became the Government didn?t mean it had to maintain the status quo.

?The problem with the two-party system is you are Opposition one day and Government the next. Reform doesn?t come because you suddenly change sides.

?We reform by changing things and doing things, not by maintaining the status quo.?

The PLP should not fall into a comfort zone with what it found, said Mr. Perinchief.

?Reform is about creating turmoil, changing things and doing things differently.?

Government should not worry about the polls said Mr. Perinchief.

?When you are making significant changes someone is going to be uncomfortable.?
