MSA is top of the class

There was standing room only at the Dockyard Clock Tower as Mount Saint Agnes scooped top place at the Annual Quiz Competition on Saturday night.

CedarBridge Academy followed in a close second in the competition.

Officially announcing the result, Director of the Department of Youth, Sport and Recreation Brenton Roberts said Mount Saint Agnes (MSA) had 250 points, CedarBridge Academy (CBA) had 215 points, Sandys Secondary Middle School (SSMS) were in third place with 200. Fourth place Whitney Institute (WI) with 130 points and Dellwood Middle School (DMS) in fifth place had 110 points.

Mr. Roberts said throughout the competition MSA had 40 bonus points, CBA had 20 bonus points and SSMS had 15 bonus points.

Mr. Roberts said there were no perfect scores during the finals, but before then MSA had three, CBA had two during the final round and SSMS and DMS had one perfect score each.

On Thursday night, MSA student and vice captain Chris Abraham had a perfect score.

?The competition was clean and there were new awards and prizes,? said Mr. Roberts.

?The Department of Youth Sport and Recreation, the Department of Education and Meyer Travel awarded the coaches of all five schools travel vouchers because of their hard work.

?Some teachers have been preparing for the contestants since last October and we wanted to acknowledge their significance to the competition,? Mr. Roberts said.

?All of the contestants of the winning teams got digital cameras and the second place winners received a Sony CD player each,? he said.

He added that the event was exciting throughout the night the participants responded extremely well.

Mr. Roberts said: ?Congratulations to MSA who were consistent all the time.

?At half time MSA had 150 points, CBA had 145, SSMS had 130, WI 100 and DMS had 85 points.

?MSA began the final round with 205, CBA with 190, SSMS with 180, WI had 125 and DMS had 110.?

Mr. Roberts added that in order for students to prepare for the current events round of the competition they had to read every day throughout the previous year.

?CBA scored 20 points during the current events section, but they only picked up one bonus point,? he said.

?MSA picked up 20 bonus points, but scored ten points.?

Mr. Roberts was unable to announce the winner of the television audience competition last night, but said the audience winners were Colleen Sinclair and Grace Garca.

Mr. Roberts said more schools participated this year and he anticipates that next year will see even more students taking part in the annual event.
