Nelson: Most Airport facilities up and running
Most of the facilities at Bermuda International Airport are back in operation, authorities said this week.
Airport general manager Lester Nelson said in a press statement that the Airport, which had been extensively damaged by Hurricane Fabian, was structurally sound.
US Immigration and Customs reopened on Monday and Mr. Nelson reported that passenger services, including the gift shop, duty free, restaurants, parking facilities and the Internet Cafe were all up and running.
Air cargo operations have resumed but only for inbound cargo.
The Sand Bar Lounge, on the upper level, will be relocated to the executive lounge next week. Most airlines serving Bermuda have resumed normal schedules, except for American Airlines, US Airways and British Airways. British Airways flights are arriving and leaving earlier, while outbound early morning American and US Airways flights have been suspended. Repair work to the outside terminal of the airport is expected to take about six months, according to Mr. Nelson. "The departures roof was substantially damaged," he said.
"We have provided temporary repairs to the canopy and will continue to assess and survey the structure to provide a longer term solution to the damage."
The lunch-time USAirways flight to Washington was cancelled yesterday due to Hurricane Isabel.
