New NDC initiative meetings launched

The National Drug Commission will take its community action programme against drugs to the central and western parishes today and tomorrow.

The Communities That Care Community (CTC) development model will be introduced to residents at two information sessions.

Tonight from 7 to 8.15 p.m. at St. James Hall, Middle Road, Sandys, Michelle Duhart of CTC will speak to residents of Sandys, Warwick and Southampton.

Tomorrow from 5.30 to 6.45 p.m., at the BIU Building in Hamilton, she will make a similar presentation to Devonshire, Paget and Pembroke residents.

Representatives from the National Drug Commission (NDC) and facilitator Family Learning Centre will also be present both nights to answer questions.

Refreshments will be provided and childcare will also be available at the BIU building.

NDC prevention officer Kim Jackson said the aim is to find community solutions by identifying risks and working to reduce them.

?The NDC believes that this approach will be the model for all communities across our Island,? she said.

?CTC is about people coming together to create healthier, happy children. We invite you to attend one of the community meetings and be a part of the solution of building a healthy community.?

Ms Duhart is currently working with the residents of Hamilton Parish to draft and implement a plan to address the identified risk factors in that area.

Ms Jackson said the project has support from various ministries including Health & Family Services, Education and Development, Community Affairs and Sport, Housing and Labour and Home Affairs.
