Now you can shape up at city's new 'green' health complex

THOSE worried about falling off the New Year's resolution wagon can quite literally breathe easier: Bermuda's first 'green' health complex is set to open any day now, with state-of-the-art controls ensuring every detail is perfect down to the freshness of the air.

The manager of the Court House Squash & Wellness Club told the Mid-Ocean News how the new gym could change the way Bermudians exercise, thanks to stringent environmental guidelines and top of the line equipment.

Located in the brand-new Victoria Place development on Victoria Street in Hamilton ¿ the island's first 'green' building ¿ Court House has been designed to the specifications of the US Green Building Council Leadership in Environmental & Energy Design (LEED) gold level.

As well as reducing the size of the gym's carbon footprint, the LEED points system will ensure the best possible indoor air quality ¿ meaning those trying to burn calories on the treadmill or win a grueling squash match will not be breathing old, recycled, humid air.

"We can monitor carbon dioxide, humidity and temperature levels in the club. Instead of reconstituted air, we replace it with fresh, clean, cool air," said manager Sue Pell, who was hired by Court House proprietor and former Athletic Club owner Richard Burns back in July, when the project was still in development stages.

Ms Pell moved back to the island after a stint overseas working for Richard Branson of Virgin fame, and will now oversee the new gym as well as driving membership sales.

Court House will feature a spinning studio alongside its brand new gym equipment.

There will also be three air-conditioned squash courts, with lessons offered by a professional and a squash ladder to encourage competition between members.

The gym, which will be open 24 hours, will also offer a host of classes and personal training sessions.

As soon as the club opens, its web site will be launched, including a section allowing members to book everything from squash courts to spinning classes online.

"There's been an unbelievable amount of interest from potential members so far," said Ms Pell, who added that the gym should be open by the end of January.

"It's been exceptional."

As well as fresh air, the LEED requirements will see Court House using only environmentally friendly cleaning products. Motion sensitive taps, showers and toilets will eliminate water wastage.

A towel service will not be offered to save energy; instead, disposable towels will be provided, but members will be encouraged to bring their own.

Court House's temporary web site is up at http://courthouse.memfirstweb.net. Those interested in learning more should call Sue Pell at 292-8357.
