NTB awards recognise Island's up and coming apprentices

Outstanding apprentices who have excelled in the National Training Board scheme received awards recognising their efforts at an awards ceremony last week.

Students who displayed achievement in their studies were presented with awards for academic achievement and dedication.

The Apprentice of the Year award was presented to Trevor Simmons for outstanding achievements as a machinist apprentice. Mr Simmons is a joint NTB and Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training apprentice who scored the highest out of the 4,000 apprentices who sat exams in Alberta, Canada.

Apprentice achievement awards were also be presented to apprentices for their outstanding achievements in technical training. The following apprentices received Apprentice Achievement Awards in recognition of their outstanding efforts.

Daniel DeCouto, Electrical Technology Apprentice, Yolanda Pearson, Plumbing Technology Apprentice, Elliot Simmons, Carpentry Technology Apprentice, and Terrence Brown, an apprentice in Air Conditioning Technology.

Mr. Craig Lewis received the Honourable C. Eugene Cox Apprentice Excellence Award in memory of the late Eugene Cox, a former electrical apprentice and electrical engineer. Mr. Lewis was recognised for his outstanding electrical studies achievements and excellence in personal conduct.

Outstanding graduate awards also recognised individuals who have demonstrated high achievement through to graduation in technical studies.

Derrick Bean, Robert Beal, Mark Richardson, Shadidah Shamsid-Deen, Dawn Smith, and Jennifer Wellman also received the outstanding graduate award.

The ceremony also honour a number of local companies who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of technical education and training.

Chairman of the National Training Board, Nalton Brangman said the awards are designed to recognise companies which enroll employees in apprenticeship and specialist technical training.
