Pair set to lodge complaint after altercation with Police

The two employees arrested on Monday following a violent altercation with Police are to lodge an official complaint against the arresting officers.

Print manager Jamie Cann, 31, was arrested on Court Street at 1.30 p.m. for committing a traffic offence and using offensive words. His wife, Shawn-Nae, 32, an advertising representative, was apprehended for obstructing her husband?s arrest and violently resisting her own.

Police claimed on Monday night that Mr. Cann had refused to move his car off a double-yellow line when asked by two officers on patrol, before swearing at them and refusing to divulge any of his personal details.

They also claim that Mrs. Cann then attempted to prevent them putting handcuffs on her husband, screamed verbal abuse and fought with the officer while he tried to restrain her ? scratching his face in the process.

But speaking candidly last night, the couple angrily rejected the Police?s version of what transpired. They claimed they were the victims of unnecessary aggression ? and have plenty of witnesses to prove it.

?The statement the Police put out on Monday was full of lies and I wanted an opportunity to put the record straight,? Mrs. Cann said.

?Firstly I was not obstructing my husband?s arrest but was merely trying to talk to him to find out what was going on. My husband then told me to get in the car and meet him down at the Hamilton Police Station. I got in the car and said ?I don?t f*****g believe this? and the next thing I know I?m being dragged out of the car and thrown over the bonnet and on the ground with my arm up behind my back. It was truly unbelievable. I?ve got bruises all over my body and as a woman I feel violated.?

A total of 12 eyewitnesses have now called and corroborated the couple?s story.

?The lady was man-handled by that Police officer for no legitimate reason,? one said.

?She was not getting in the way of the arrest but was only asking to speak to the man before going to sit in the car. The officer was way out of line and could not believe it when I saw what the Police were saying in their statement in Monday?s paper.?

And contrary to Police reports, Mrs. Cann said she has not been formally charged with any of the offences she allegedly committed but had merely been asked to return to Hamilton Police Station at a later date.

?My phone has been ringing off the hook with people who witnessed the incident with their support,? she said.

?I?d like to thank them all for their concern and their prayers. These officers need to be held accountable.?

Meanwhile, Police spokesman Dwayne Caines last night urged all those who witnessed the event to come forward.

?Clearly there is an enormous difference between the complainants? and the Police?s version of events,? he said.

?The situation is being handled in the appropriate manner. However, we are inviting any witnesses to the incident to come forward so that we can get an account from a variety of sources.?
