Patrina Swan is this year's recipient of the $10,000 Mrs. C. Vail Zuill scholarship award.

Ms Swan, 21, is currently studying science education at Florida State University. She plans to return to Bermuda after her studies to teach.

Patrina was raised by her grandmother, Marlene Swan, following the death of her parents. She graduated with honours from Berkeley, and before Florida State she attended Bermuda College and Alabama A&M.

Patrina has volunteered at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute, the Bermuda Pacers Track Club, Leeds High School, the America Reads programme in Florida, and the Bermuda School Sports Federation Ltd. Track & Field Classic.

The money for the scholarship is raised every year by Bermuda Junior Service League members through annual dues and annual fundraising events.
