Pedal cyclist, 53, in collision with truck
A 53-year-old pedal cyclist died yesterday after being in collision with a truck.
It brings to the four the number of road deaths this year.
The accident occurred at the junction of Palmetto Road and Bishop Spencer Road, Pembroke.
Both roads were closed to traffic as Police - including Commissioner George Jackson - collected information at the scene.
Schoolchildren who lived nearby were told to move out of sight from the blood on the road.
A resident told The Royal Gazette she heard the collision, but did not witness it.
Police media spokesman Dwayne Caines said emergency services were alerted at 4.42 p.m.
It appeared the cyclist was riding along Bishop Spencer Road when he collided with the truck travelling west on Palmetto Road.
The victim was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, but later died from his injuries.
"At this present time no further information will be given until the next of kin has been notified."
The driver of the truck and his passenger refused to comment about what happened.
It was not known yesterday whether charges would be laid against the driver.
The first fatal collision this year was 18-year-old Ryan Burgess on February 10 at Parsons Road, the second was Alvin Flood, 45 at North Shore Road, Hamilton parish on March 4, and the third was Samuel Fubler, 20 on Middle Road, Southampton on March 22.
There have been other deaths on Bermuda's roads in 2006, but Police said the drivers had pre-existing medical conditions.
