Pembroke man collapses after getting off motorcycle

Police officers gave mouth-to-mouth resuscitation to a motorcyclist believed to have been taken ill while riding along Frog Lane, Devonshire, but he died despite their efforts.

According to a Police spokesman, the 51-year-old was travelling south near the National Sports Centre when he appeared to come into difficulties.

"He stopped his motorcycle and then fell off it. An on-duty Community Beat Officer noticed him and radioed for help, and the man was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital," said Dwayne Caines.

The emergency call came at 12.38 p.m., and the victim, from Pembroke, was pronounced dead 30 minutes later despite aid from officers from the nearby Police headquarters. The road was closed for around half an hour. An autopsy is due to be carried out, but Mr. Caines said yesterday that the man was not being treated as the victim of a road traffic collision. His identity had not been released last night.

The incident came just hours after another motorist suffered a suspected medical emergency while behind the wheel. At 7.30 am, Police attended a collision involving two cars on Harbour Road, Warwick, near the junction with Chapel Road.

A spokesman said it appeared that a black Hyundai was travelling east and a white Toyota was heading in the opposite direction when the Toyota driver ? a 25-year-old Southampton man ? lost control and collided with the other car and then a wall.

Police believe that the man suffered a seizure, resulting in the collision. He was taken to KEMH but discharged after treatment. The driver of the Hyundai, a 24-year-old Sandys man, was not injured.
