In its survey for Save Our City, set up to stop the abolition of the Corporation of Hamilton, Research.bm found that people in Bermuda were overwhelmingly against any move to get rid of the organisation. Here are some of the comments from those surveyed.

A way of monopolizing power; one organization having too much power.

Access to additional assets that they can borrow against.

Access to finances of the corporations.

Additional assets and control.

Another area that they can control, something else to ruin.

Another form of revenue.

Assets.

Assets (the ownerships of corporations, city hall the docks libraries, bank accounts).

Based on what I’ve heard and what I’ve read, I think it is essentially to get a hold on the funds.

Because they want the money that the corporations make. They want to be in control of absolutely everything. They just want to control every area of Bermuda and keep them in line.

Because of the two big jobs coming up; the hotel and docks. They can use the Corporation’s assets to borrow more money and go in debt. The Corporation is not in debt, the Government is in debt.

Because the Government is in a mess.

Because they are trying their hardest to take Bermuda out, soon as there is change in government all of us will be better off.

Because they can’t do as good a job they do as present corporations are doing.

Because they mis-managed the fund of this country to we are almost bankrupt.

Because they see this as another cash flow.

Because they want better control over everything.

Because they want the assets.

Because they want the buildings and assets for going to the markets to raise money to cover the deficits spending.

Because they want to acquire the assets of the municipalities for use in borrowing more money , to just have a little bit more power.

Because they want to have total control of everything, they will have an increase tax base.

Control a lot of services and facilities (buildings) and also power (over the whole system).

Has a friend who works for the Corporation and he is not very happy about the Corporation.

I am very confused that why the government want to take over the corporation . they both run quite smoothly and they add another dimension the way we govern ourselves.

I believe it to get their hands on the assets owned by the corporations.

I believe its the lack of democracy in the Corporation that pump it the government to take it over.

I believe the present government can’t bare the fact that there are separate entities controlling the city. They want to get their hands on the assets of the Corporation to use as collateral to future borrowings.

I feel that they have only have a few could vote and that’s why they should take over.

I guess the consolidation in running the island. The more we can do together the better we can get alone.

I guess they want to get their hands on what they got so they can do what they want to do.

I guess they will have better control with what happens with city. They subsidize corporations. It only seems natural.

I guess to consolidate all of the budgets, I have no idea, to make money I guess, I don’t know.

I just have a strong feeling there’s a lot of money there and the government needs money and they would have control over just about all the water fronts around Bermuda and I don’t it’s a good idea at all for one group to have control of it all.

I just think this government is so awful; that it’s just trying to take over absolutely everything. They just want to be in charge without help from other people. I find the government is overpowering everybody.

I only know what I’ve read, it’s probably for financial reasons, corporations collect certain taxes within the city.

I partly think they want to have control of everything. They want to monopolize and have control of everything.

I personally feel that they feel it is a lubricate foundation financial wise.

I say keeping everything under one umbrella.

I suspect it has to do with finance.

I think its a bit devious. I believe it’s a political move to control every aspect of life in Bermuda.

I think the Government is not in favour of these independent elected bodies which are not under the control of the Government. They manage a set of very valuable assets.

I think they are trying to cut cost of duplication but I don’t think it will be very successful.

I would imagine it so that it would be better run so they would have better control of the municipalities, as far as the roads and stuff like and infrastructures in my opinion.

I would say a wielding of power, looking also to add to their properties and they would benefit from the taxes.

I would say it is general knowledge to seek control of their assets to enlarge their borrowing power. Probably a just a grab for even more power.

If the corporations where inefficient, and if the government needs to step in and correct it.

In my opinion it’s because Hamilton is not in debt and the government would have to open up everything to take it over. I don’t really know why the government wants to get in there.

In order to get their assets.

In order to increase their ability to get loans by having more assets.

Incompetence of the municipalities in general management.

It hasn’t been made clear what their intentions are to take over corporation of the St. Georges and Hamilton.

It is the combination of wanting their cash flow, assets, ultimate power and controlling the new hotel developments and gambling.

It seems like it’s an acquisition of power and resources. It seems like a personal issue with individuals in the government, they want to control the entire Bermuda without any drains on their power structure.

Its a land grab and financial grab.

It’s all financial. It’s for power as well.

Its for more effective administration and stream lining.

Its probably for power; it could be power.

It’s revenue based and they want more control. They want to get a-hold of their own property so they have more collateral when they go to their lenders.

Just control.

Just greed they want more money, they don’t want to look after the island, their not interested in the people.

Just that they have utmost power. Just making more money for other people. They are trying to make jobs and give people jobs. It is redundant.

Money and total controls, of everything, particularly of the docks. The land that the corporation owns would also be handy for them. There is certainly an ulterior motive and I don’t trust this government at all.

My feeling is a valuable operation.

My opinion is that they want the revenue. Control.

Re-dress history. Re-dress racial history. It is basically the one remaining institution from apartheid Bermuda therefore there is an emotional motivation to dismantle it. It is perceived to be the last place where white people can get involved.

So that they can do a better job. Bring in the ships and whatever. Building up the town of St. Georges.

So that they can have everything under the same control.

So that they can have the real estate, so that we’ll give them more borrowing power with the banks, the power to run to the city, so their asset base is that much larger.

So they can control it and have all the taxes.

So they can control it for their benefit and not for the town’s or corporation’s benefit.

So they can get access to the money.

So they can have control.

So they can have more money to spend.

So they can impose another agenda into the city, possibly also to shake up the other corporations making them proactive, making them working better together, maybe to get access to assets.

So they can obtain more revenues.

So they can stuff more money in their pockets.

Solve their own debt throughout borrowing money to pay their debt. Acquire more assets.

Something monopulary (money), something they can grab and use that the city fore father’s have done.

Take tax person’s money to pay off the dept.

Tax grabs they have a lot money in there kitty as a way to take over their asset and their revenue potential is great.

They want the money and they want the power.

That they want to get their hands over the assets.

The 5 billion dollar assets. Trying to poke in where they are not wanted.

The corporations have been conducting very well financially as opposed to the government. This is why I think they would want to take over the municipalities.

The monies that they’re accumulating, they want the corporation’s money.

The primary reason is to confiscate the half-billion dollar assets that belong to the corporations. They want to add those assets to the government’s balance sheet which would allow them to borrow more money on the international level.

The real reason is to that they can increase their borrowing, they want assets to increase their borrowing, with more assets their borrowing can increase, after budget its an effort for them to enrich themselves.

The real reason is increase in revenue and more power because of the landmass.

The reason that comes to mind immediately is that the government could greatly enhance their assets, especially for borrowing funds to their coffers.

They’re hoping to streamline the administration in those two municipalities.

Their not doing a very good job their losing money and have no way of making money.

There’s a lot of money involved.

There’s an ulterior motive or motives behind it, probably making their own financial situation as a political party more secure.

There’s no explanation.

There’s not much improvement in St. Georges, the dock is not used. The people need more work and entertainment in St. Georges. They need something to keep their time occupied.

They are (the government) self-serving.

They are power hungry, they want the money that the Corporation has and lots of assets.

They are running out of money because they are spending it like drunken sailors and they can see that there is money in the corporations, so they want to take it over.

They don’t have enough money - running deficit.

They have a lot of potential, a good tax system, and are very efficient. They are not in debt and is a corporation which is worth millions. This is due to the property they own and the taxes they collect.

They have income that the government would like to have to pay off their debts.

They have made of mess of everything and they are looking for more money to back up their errors. I could probably say a lot more things but the language I could say would not be polite so I’d prefer not to.

They just want more power into everything.

They want to get rich for it, that’s my personal opinion. They don’t really care about people, too many people are out of jobs. Not too good for people and money and tourists. They’re trying to take people out of jobs.

They want to have assets of the corporation to provide more collateral against which the national government can borrow more money, they won’t be able to pay back. They’re after total power.

They want to have control over most things in the country. They will have the incomes. The government is taking over a lot of incomes. The corporation of Hamilton is partially well organized and well run because of the independence of government.

They want to have more control over the whole island.

They want to land.

They want to maintain control of everything on the island.

They want to possess more property, increase their ability to borrow money, they are dictatorial and they want to have control over everything.

They want to put heir hands on one more thing, I don’t think they have a good reason for it, I just think they need to leave them alone, they have enough problems running the government and not doing job at that.

They’re looking for land-grab and that’s totally against democracy.

Their looking to seize assets to compensate for their for their over expenditures across the board what is required is a judicial review by the UK Government..

To add to their power and wealth.

To be in control of the whole Bermuda, get hold of the revenues, land

To me it seems like money. They had too much money and the government wanted to take control of it.

Tried to get employed in the Corporation, didn’t get it and through that the government takeover might get a better chance to get the job.

We are about a dot in the ocean why do we need a government within a government.

Well I can only guess they will acquire valuable assets in my opinion its just a move away from democracy.
