Pit bulls? attacks on goats, cost owner $600

A Warwick man was fined $600 for being in control of two Pit bulls ? which have since been put to sleep ? that killed a goat and badly hurt another in Warwick in March.

Gladwin Antonio Russell, 22, of Cedar Hill, pleaded guilty to being the owner of two Pit bulls, Adam and Eve, that caused the death of two goats on Gerry Wilmot?s farm on Farm Lane on March 5.

Russell also admitted that the dog called ?Adam? did not have a licence.

Crown counsel Anthony Blackman said the dogs escaped from their residence then injured the goats.

Mr. Blackman told Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner that Russell had already been making compensatory payments to the goat owner.

?We are satisfied with his efforts to reimburse him for the loss of his animals,? he said. ?The Department (of Public Prosecutions) would be happy if leniency was exercised in this regard.?

He added that Russell, the complainant and a dog warden had already been in discussions to work out a solution.

Mr. Warner said the statute listed a fine of $5,000 for the crime but instead fined Russell $500 on each count.

But when Mr. Blackman said, ?the dogs are no longer with us?, Mr. Warner reduced the penalty to $200 on each count.

It was reported in March that the goats were attacked in the night and that one goat?s head was so badly chewed that it needed to be put to sleep.
