PLP loyalist turned off by arrogance

Some of the Progressive Labour Party's (PLP) staunchest supporters are disillusioned by the "arrogant" behaviour of some Government MPs, a party activist has said.

In an article in the June 20 edition of The Workers' Voice, PLP loyalist Laverne Furbert predicted her party would win a reduced majority in the upcoming election and added that it deserved another term in office.

In particular, she said Government's main achievements had been in the areas of constitutional reform, education and employee welfare. However, she blasted some MPs for appearing to forget that Parliament is a "servant of the people".

And Ms Furbert said she believed that some PLP members would "sit this one out and will choose not to walk the hills and dales of Bermuda to ensure the party's victory at the polls.

"It is no secret that the arrogance displayed by some PLP MPs during the last five years has discouraged some of the party's most staunch supporters."

PLP spokesperson Walter Roban, while pointing out that he had not read the article, said that "unless she has spoken to every single one of the PLP supporters then I'm not sure how much weight you can give that.

"We are prepared to measure by the facts and those are that thousands from the amount of people that registered seem like they have a positive interest in this election."

Although she did not name individuals, Ms Furbert said she thought "too many" Government MPs "acted as if the people were there to serve them, hence the arrogance".

She added: "Some of us wonder if those who are first-time candidates will also put on the mantle of arrogance once they are elected." Despite this, Ms Furbert said the PLP was worthy of another term because it has "fulfilled many of the promises it made" in 1998, "most importantly single-seat constituencies".

She continued: "Other promises fulfilled include the Employment Act 2000, smaller classrooms and better regulations for work permit holders and security for long-term residents. The PLP government has endeavoured to tackle the housing crisis although there is still much to be done in this area."
