Police car badly damaged in high-speed chase
A Pembroke man led Police on a high-speed ? and costly ? chase through Hamilton yesterday.
During the drama he smashed into a $35,000 Police car (pictured left), leaving it badly damaged. He also reportedly rammed a Police truck and tried to knock another officer off his bike.
The chase had a bizarre ending after Police doused the man with mace. He allegedly grabbed a hammer from his car and entered the Mid Atlantic Wellness Institute. After being confronted by officers he stripped off before being detained.
Police were initially alerted after a 28-year-old man threatened to kill his girlfriend.
He was later seen driving a silver Peugeot in Pembroke and Devonshire.
Officers chased the man to Cedar Park, where he is said to have rammed a truck.
The chase continued along St. Monica's Mission. The head-on collision occurred as the man was turning from Marsh Folly Road onto Palmetto Road. Nobody was hurt.
A witness said he heard a loud bang and saw smoke when the crash happened. "They definitely doused him with some mace, got it straight in his face," the witness said. "The Police officer was close enough to put his hand in the driver's window. Then the guy just backed up and took off down Palmetto Road."
A Police spokesman confirmed that "incapacitating spray" had been used, although he was not sure if contact had been made.
After the collision, Police said the motorist drove in an erratic manner, at high speed, along Parsons Road, Middle Road in Devonshire and Hermitage Road. The man abandoned his vehicle, grabbed a hammer, and entered the Mid Atlantic Wellness Institute through a back entrance . He ran down the hall before being confronted by officers. The suspect then took of his clothes. After Police threatened to use pepper spray he lay on the ground. He was taken to the Hamilton Police Station where he was underwent "decontamination", a Police spokesman said, because of his possible contact with the pepper spray. The man has not yet been charged.
