Police promise heavy presence for holiday

An extra 100 Police officers will be on duty over tomorrow's Bermuda Day holiday, Police said yesterday.

Superintendent Michael DeSilva said 100 extra officers will be on duty for the holiday. Night patrols will be "more robust" with Court Street to have a large amount of officers due to heavy traffic flow and the large amount of people expected to attend the festivities.

Hamilton and a few main roads will be closed for a portion of the day due to the marathon and parade. Front Street between Par-La-Ville Road and King Street as well as Church and Victoria Streets will be closed from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Middle Road will be closed to westbound traffic at the junction of Barnes Corner at 8.30 a.m. for the beginning of the road race. Harbour Road will be closed to all traffics from 8.45 to 11.30 a.m.

Heritage Day also marks the beginning of the boating season in Bermuda and Police advised anyone wishing to use vessels over the holiday to ensure that they were registered with proper 2006 decal. It is also important to have adequate safety equipment on board and sufficient amounts of fuel.

Supt. DeSilva also reminded people that it was a serious offence to play loud music and he requested that loud music and partying should be done with respect and courtesy to avoid Police involvement.

During last year's holiday there were 23 road traffics collisions, 17 reports of loud music, 14 reports of annoying persons, 11 disturbances including fighting in public, 10 marine violations, 9 incidents of domestic assault, 6 assaults and 2 arrests for impaired driving.

Supt. DeSilva said: "We expect this year will be exactly the same as last year ? these are some of the highlights".

When asked about the cost of extra staff he said Government would foot the bill for the expenses.
