Police Sumo challenge to benefit Fabian victim families

Police officers will be transformed into Sumo wrestlers next month for a benefit for the families of the victims of Hurricane Fabian.

The event will kick off with local entertainment at 7 p.m. on November 15 at the Police Recreation Club. At 8 p.m. a Sumo wrestling competition will take place to determine the Police Sumo Wrestler champion for the year 2003.

"About 16 of our colleagues will be climbing into padded suits that will transform them into Sumo Wrestlers," said a press statement announcing the benefit.

"Whilst the event will require a combination of skill and strength from the participants, it will provide a bundle of laughs for the spectators."

An auction and raffle is also planned and organisers are seeking prize donations from the community.

"The organisers are hoping that Bermuda's businesses, retailers, restaurateurs and artists support the event by donating products, services or artwork that can be auctioned on the night," the Police statement said.

An account has also been set up at the Bank of Bermuda for those wishing to make a monetary donation.

Deposits can be made directly to the fund - "September 5th Victim Fund" (account number 1501-819200) - or by sending a cheque to Inspector Craig Morfitt at Police headquarters.

Inspector Morfitt and Constable Shannell Astwood can also be contacted at 299-4327 for prize donations.

Civilian Manuel Pacheco and Police officers Stephen Symons, Nicole O'Connor, and Gladys Saunders all perished at the Causeway during Hurricane Fabian.

All proceeds from the benefit will be donated to their families.
