Policeman forced to resign
An Island Policeman has been forced to resign from the service after beating his girlfriend.
Barbadian Dennis Archer, 41 of Devonshire, was fined $1,200 in Magistrates? Court after he was convicted of assaulting Jacqueline Jackson and causing her actual bodily harm in Devonshire on July 18, 2003.
On August 18, the Commissioner of Police said he would soon be making a decision as to whether Mr. Archer would be allowed to stay in the Bermuda Police Service.
But yesterday a Police spokesman confirmed that Mr. Archer who represented Bermuda on the cricket field, has handed in a letter of resignation to the Bermuda Police Service.
?Dennis Archer has handed in his letter of resignation and we have accepted it,? the spokesman said.
As an unemployed non-Bermudian Mr. Archer may not be permitted to stay on the Island.
?Those issues are out of the remit of the Bermuda Police Service,? the spokesman said.
However, Chief Immigration Officer Martin Brewin said yesterday that while the Department of Immigration does not comment on individual cases, any person convicted of criminal offences generally have to leave the Island.
Mr. Brewin could not say how long Mr. Archer would be allowed to stay on the Island without a work permit.
