Premier says Gibbons ?misleading? public, media

The row over the Bermuda Independence Commission (BIC) report rumbled on yesterday, with Premier Alex Scott accusing opposition leader Grant Gibbons of misleading the media and public.

The Premier expressed a desire to ?set the record straight? regarding his recent comment that the United Bermuda Party had not made a submission to the BIC. In a press statement, he pointed out that in Annex 1 of the report ? a note dated June 2 ? states that while a written submission was to be made by the UBP, the opportunity for a presentation meeting was declined by the UBP.

Mr. Scott went on to say that what was produced and submitted in the report was a synopsis of the UBP?s submission on the subject of a Referendum vs General Election.

?This was reportedly determined by the BIC Commissioners to not address their mandate to gather material and report on the subject of Independence specifically. However, they still included a synopsis of the submission of the submission in their final 600 page report,? said Mr. Scott.

?Consequently, the Opposition Leader is obviously misleading the media and public when he infers that the BIC Report did not include a submission from the UBP? he added.

The Premier concluded by saying that, following his public comment, Dr. Gibbons was immediately contacted and offered the opportunity to place on the Government?s Independence Community website any material that was produced and submitted to the BIC.

This, he said was placed on the website on Wednesday and the public can now access the submission at www.gov.bm
