Premier upbeat on his future

Premier Alex Scott has no intention of giving up the Premiership anytime soon ? unless, of course, his party demands it.

Mr. Scott said yesterday that he wanted to lead the Progressive Labour Party through the next General Elections, and, if the country chose Independence, become Bermuda?s first Prime Minister.

The Premier was asked to update the country on his health and his political ambitions at a press conference on Government?s initiatives for the Island?s seniors.

He said he had had ?chronic retention? but was now cleared of any serious health issues.

?I was 135 pounds, now 165 ? I?m fat, that?s the health challenge right now.? He said he was excited at what the future could bring for Bermuda and wanted to remain leader of the PLP and the country.

?The social agenda done right will change the landscape of politics in Bermuda. It means we are going to be user-friendly. If any community can do it, this one can,? he said.

?We?ll also be talking about sovereignty. If I?m the Premier and I become Prime Minister, you won?t be able to wipe the smile off my face. We have an interesting road ahead.

?It?s going to take tenacity, boldness and innovation. I think I?m up to it.? But, Mr. Scott added, he would know when it?s time to take a bow.

?I know where the door is, I know where the light switch is,? he said.

Asked if he wanted to be Bermuda?s first Prime Minister, he replied: ?Wouldn?t you??
