Puerto Rico flight diverts to Bermuda

An American Airlines Boeing 757 suffered a mid-air emergency and diverted to Bermuda after the smell of burning electrics was detected in the cockpit and main cabin during a flight between Philadelphia and Puerto Rico.

The flight?s 106 passengers and six crew spent almost 10 hours stranded at Bermuda International Airport waiting for a replacement plane and crew to continue the journey.

An investigation was underway last night to find out what caused the burning odour inside the plane. The Boeing remained on the ground at the airport overnight as checks were carried out and spare parts were brought in from the US. However, the passengers on the flight number 1937 who had taken off from Philadelphia at 8 a.m. yesterday and found themselves back on the ground at Bermuda Airport at 11.28 a.m. were able to resume their journey last night.

A scheduled AA flight from New York?s JFK yesterday evening brought a replacement crew who took charge of the plane after it was given a speedy turnaround and took off just before 9 p.m. for Puerto Rico with the passengers from flight 1937.

American Airlines? spokesman Tim Smith said the plan was to carry out any necessary repairs on the original plane and have it ready to fly back to JFK this morning,
