Rare stamp fetches $104,885

One of the 11 Perot stamps in the world was sold at the auction Spink, a London auction house from the Baron Stig Leuhusen Collection. The black stamp was cut but expertly put back together and sold for $71,051

One of the rare Bermuda Perot stamps put on the auction block yesterday in London sold for just over $100,000.

The rare red Perot stamp was from the Baron Stig Leuhusen Collection of Bermuda. It sold for $104,885 at London auction house Spink.

The auction also included a black stamp from 1849 on its original envelope and a red stamp from1856 on blue paper. Both were produced by postmaster William Perot and endorsed by him. With only 11 Perot stamps in the world (four owned by the Queen) the black stamp, which was torn but expertly put back together, sold for $71,051 while the red stamp, which has never been repaired, sold a little higher than estimated at $104,885.

Former Premier David Saul, an avid stamp collector who owns two Perot stamps, estimated that the two stamps would sell for around $200,000.

One of the other interesting stamp collections that sold high was the ?Moncrieff? cover, which is also on its original envelope and sold for $42,293. The collection from the Swedish Baron, who once lived in Bermuda, included 334 lots of stamps and the auction drew in $498,793.
