Sandys North Central: No surprises as Lister holds his seat

There were no surprises in Sandys North Central as Progressive Labour Party candidate Dennis Lister romped to victory once again in the parish.

"It was predicted we would win," said Mr. Lister after the results were in.

"People have shown they understand we are just in the beginning stages of government. They have shown they are prepared to let us move forward."

And Mr. Lister - who has represented different parts of Sandys for 15 years, thanked the voters for once again supporting him.

United Bermuda Party candidate Anthony Steede said: "God has spoken. The people of Sandys have spoken. They are obviously content with second-rate representatives."

This was Mr. Steede's second time running in Sandys.

Mr. Lister said he and other PLP members had always done their homework in Somerset. "We have always had a strong base of support in the area," he said. "With the new boundaries, you don't know what will happen."

But Mr. Steede said he had a very positive response while canvassing.

"A lot of people say they have had the same representative since 1989 and nothing has changed in that time," he said. He said crime was still a big issue for the constituency.

"There are also issues for seniors in the parish," he said. "The Sandys Parish Rest Home has been closed since 1999. Nothing has happened to bring that back to life."

Voting was fairly slow during the day with 300 estimated voters by 11.30 a.m. Terry Lister, running for the PLP in Sandys South, was the last person in the door. He rushed in at exactly 7.58 p.m. to cast his vote.

RESULT

Dennis Lister (PLP) 532

Anthony Steede (UBP) 262
