School principals to meet and define their position today
Principals from the Island?s public schools will meet today to discuss teachers? work to rule action after the Ministry of Education announced possible teacher sick outs over the next couple of days.
Yesterday, the Ministry of Education warned parents of sick outs at selected schools. Parents were advised to have alternative arrangements for their children just in case.
Laverne Simons, the principal at Heron Bay Primary said to her knowledge parents have not been expressing concerns about the teachers? work to rule action.
Teachers took the action after months of failed pay talks.
They are refusing to help with custodial duties such as conducting exams and supervising at lunches and recesses.
Mrs. Simons said she is supervising the school?s 110 students herself for lunch and recess duty and spends about two hours a day on custodial duties. ?Parents have not brought any concerns to my attention,? she said. The school has a staff of 16 teachers and runs from Primary one to six.
?I?m understanding where they?re coming from and what they?re doing. Being a principal, I?m out of the loop in what?s happening. Having been a teacher myself, and still considering myself a teacher, I consider what they?re asking for to be fair. A teacher?s job is not an easy job.?
Principal at West End Primary, Livingston Tuzo, said the Association of School Principals will meet today to discuss the role they play in the teacher?s industrial action.
Mr. Tuzo would not comment on the issues principals are expected to discuss.
