Senior?s death not linked to alleged sexual assault

An alleged sex assault on an elderly man in a church-run nursing home was not to blame for his death, Police revealed yesterday.

The Warwick man ? believed to be aged 81 ? died a week ago at the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital. A post-mortem has shown that it was as a result of natural causes.

Police spokesman Dwayne Caines said: ?The autopsy came back and there was no indication that his death was the result of a sexual assault.?

He said the investigation into the alleged attack, at the Matilda Smith Williams home, in Devonshire, earlier this month, was ongoing. A man believed to be a male orderly at the home was arrested in connection with the incident and later released on bail.

Reverend Malcolm Eve, presiding elder of the African Methodist Episcopal Churches, which runs the home, said last week that a statement on the matter would be issued.has not received a statement and has been unable to contact Rev. Eve for further comment.

Thelma Trott, chairman of the home?s governing board, would not comment on the alleged attack yesterday or say whether an internal inquiry was being carried out at the home, on Kent Avenue.

She said: ?It is a matter for the Police. It is in the hands of the Police and so I can?t speak on it. I don?t think I should communicate about it.?

The alleged victim?s family also declined to comment.

?It is being dealt with by the Police,? said a female relative.
