Speaker refuses to table Housing Corporation report

The Opposition again failed to get the Auditor General?s report on the Bermuda Housing Corporation controversy tabled in the House of Assembly yesterday.

Opposition Whip attempted to table the investigation into the BHC fiasco yesterday in the House of Assembly, however it was refused by the Speaker of the House who said the report had not been officially delivered to the House.

Mr. Barritt?s motion was: ?This House endorses the investigation of the affairs of BHC by the Auditor General and his report dated May 2002.?

In June, Shadow Housing Minister Wayne Furbert also attempted to table the BHC report but at the time Mr. Lowe refused, it saying it would be prejudicial to the then-ongoing investigation.

Premier Alex Scott received the report on August 19 and made it public on August 26.

Yesterday Mr. Barritt said he had copies of the report by Auditor General Larry Dennis in front of him but other members of the House did not because the report still had not been delivered to the House.

Mr. Barritt later told that the purpose of tabling the report was to discuss it and to hear what has been done and further what needs to be done.

?I do not think it should be swept under the carpet,? he said.

Auditor General Larry Dennis was unavailable yesterday for comment on why the report had not been delivered to the House to date.

Government Whip objected to Mr. Barritt?s attempt to table the BHC report because he said that it should have been in writing and that it was not proper protocol to table a report that had not been delivered to the House.

Mr. Barritt said the report had already been made public and therefore should be tabled.

Mr. Lowe refused the motion and said that since the report had not been delivered to the House and he had not gone over it, he could not accept the motion at that time.
