State of the art lab open to public

There is an opportunity to find out what goes on at the pathology department of the King Edward Memorial VII Hospital this morning with staff conducting tours and providing explanations into the work of the hospital?s laboratories in diagnosis and treatment of illness.

As part of Lab Week 2006, the Bermuda Hospitals Board is hosting an open house on the theme of ?Providing Answers, Guiding Cures? to show how staff diagnose illness and arrange treatment.

?Highly qualified staff, using state-of-the-art technology and instrumentation, assist physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of existing conditions and the prevention of others,? said Dr. Kered James, chief of pathology for the BHB.

?The provision of accurate, timely test results pays a crucial role in patient care.?

Each year, the pathology department deals with around 5,000 transfusions, carries out more than 120 autopsies and cytology processes 6,200 specimens.

Members of the public can visit the laboratory between 10 a.m. and 11.30 a.m. today.
