Friday?s Budget threw up some interesting statistics. Here are a sample.

It takes nine months on average to complete a criminal injury compensation claim which average out at $13,162.

There were 901 cases heard in the Supreme Court but only 15 criminal trials.

Magistrates? Court had 1,012 convictions in 2003 while 185 people were acquitted.

9,967 people were found guilty of traffic offences while 1,537 were found not guilty.

Customs officers found 430,671 grams of drugs worth $41,707,225 plus 42 obscene publications. 962 lookouts were posted leading to 481 positive searches.

The education department had 2,661 computer terminals installed as of June, 2002. 18.6 percent of school staff were male.

The average cost of education per student was $10,551. 101 students left the state schools for private schools while 28 came back in.

480 children were referred to Family Services over abuse and neglect ? down from 555 the previous year.

It costs $14,942 to feed the Island?s inmates every week. But Bermuda?s recidivism rate fell from 80 percent to 65 percent while inmates enrolled in education programmes rose from 92 to 147. It now costs $55,792 to imprison an inmate for a year.

The Parliamentary Registrar have registered 99.1 percent of Bermuda?s voters ? up more than four percent from January, 2003.

138 courses were offered to civil servants last year comprising 1,966 people while 38 had overseas training. 245 posts were advertised of which 208 were filled. However there was only a 15 percent return rate on forward job plans and personal development plans.

The department of archives destroyed 348 feet of records, arranged 698 feet of records and catalogued 26,721 items.

The Department of Communication and Information dealt with 42 inquiries from overseas media, held 175 press conferences and issued 450 Press releases.

House of Assembly meetings increased by eight to 35. Government MPs had an attendance record of 90 percent and Opposition 86 percent.
