Store pulls gas cooker after US safety recall

Masters Ltd. has pulled a gas range from it store after suppliers Maytag issued a warning about carbon monoxide and burn hazards.

Masters, who is the only company on the Island selling the ovens, was notified about problems around a month ago and notified the three customers who had bought them.

Maytag Corp. is recalling about 50,000 Amana Big Oven gas ranges which emit high levels of the gas during the broil and self-clean modes.

In those modes, the storage drawer also becomes extremely hot, which could burn consumers, the Consumer Product Safety Commission of America said Wednesday.

Maytag, based in Iowa, USA, has received no reports of injuries. The company is offering to repair the ranges for free.

Masters' Executive Vice President Mark Stearns said: "The carbon monoxide levels don't meet standards, but it isn't life or death. There are steps to fix it."

The three customers are now awaiting further word from the company about how to repair the ovens, which retailed at more than $1,500 while the company is keeping hold of its stock.

Bermuda Government Consumer Affairs Executive Officer Karen Marshall said: "It's a voluntary recall. We are waiting to see if the supplier will issue a replacement kit or pull it completely."

The recalled 30-inch self-cleaning gas ranges have the following model and serial numbers:

- Model ACF3315A (T) (K); Serial numbers beginning: 0005 through 0103.

- Model ACF3335A (W) (C) (B) (S); Serial numbers beginning: 0005 though 0107.

- Model ACF3375A (W) (C) (B) (S); Serial numbers beginning: 0006 through 0107.

The model and serial numbers are on a tag inside the storage drawer. The brand name "Amana" appears on the front of the gas range.

Maytag bought Amana Appliances in July. The US safety commission advises consumers to stop using the self-clean or broil functions. The ranges are safe for baking and for cooking on the surface burners.
