Taxpayer to take a hit with adjournment

Taxpayers are out of pocket thousands of dollars as British witnesses are set to leave Bermuda - without testifying after a Supreme Court robbery trial failed to start for the second time this week.

The trial of Dean Eve and Kenneth Boyles was adjourned to give Boyles' attorney time to review his the case, following an adjournment on Monday when Assistant Justice Charles-Etta Simmons gave Boyles, 24, the opportunity to get a lawyer.

By the restart yesterday, Boyles had retained lawyer Patrick Doherty who requested an adjournment until Thursday. Several Crown witnesses live in the UK and are due to leave on Thursday.

Mrs. Justice Simmons instead requested the men return to court on May 1 for the monthly arraignment session, when a new trial date will be set.

Both men were granted bail, however, Boyles remains in custody for another matter.

Eve, represented by Victoria Pearman, is free on $2,000 bail with two like sureties. While on bail, he must reside at his mother's home and report to the Hamilton Police Station three times a week.
