Teacher under investigation over allegation of assault

A primary school teacher is under investigation for an assault on a former lover, The Royal Gazette has learned.

And, although the woman was allegedly involved in another violent altercation earlier this year and more recently jailed for breaching a court order, she has kept her position at Francis Patton Primary to the outrage of some parents.

"This teacher is a civil servant," said mother Vandlita Tyrell. "Can a teacher have a criminal record? She teaches primary school."

Ms Tyrell said she had considered sending her own son to Francis Patton but would not do so while this teacher was still employed there.

Yesterday, however, Chief Education Officer Joanne Smith said while the Ministry was aware of the allegations against the teacher they would not comment further on the matter.

Ms Smith said education chiefs would be meeting with the teacher to discuss her future very soon.

"We are planning to meet with her now that she is available," Ms Smith said yesterday. "We would like to do that before making any public statement on the matter."

The woman involved was released from the Co-Ed Facility in Ferry Reach yesterday after serving seven days in detention for breaching a child custody order.

The Royal Gazette was told the woman took her child from his school without the father's permission.

The father has custody of the child and was the alleged victim of the assault last week.

Yesterday, Police spokesman Dwayne Caines confirmed that the 29-year-old Pembroke woman was arrested for a breach of a court order last week was the same woman under investigation for the assault.

"Police are looking into the assault which took place on September 25 at 4.20 a.m.," Mr. Caines said.

According to the original Police incident report, the man woke up at 3 a.m. at the barking of a neighbourhood dog but thought nothing of it and went back to sleep.

Moments later, he received blows to his head and body from an assailant bearing a blunt object.

"As a result the victim suffered a large welt and a laceration to the right side of his head, as well as abrasions and welts to his arms and legs," the Police media report said.

The man was later treated for his injuries and released but reportedly told Police he did not recognise his assailant.

The female teacher in question was already reportedly being investigated by the Education Ministry after becoming involved in a violent scuffle with another woman at the annual Agricultural Show.

An education spokeswoman said at that time, that an anonymous complaint was made to the Ministry with regard to the fight.
