Teenager hungry for a fight fined after public brawl

A Pembroke youth who threatened an off-duty Police officer at a Hamilton restaurant was fined $1,600 after he pleaded guilty to using threatening words and fighting in a public place.

Adrian Benjamin, 18, admitted to Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner that he was involved in fracas on Queen Street and threatened the officer after being warned to stop fighting.

Crown Counsel Wayne Caines told the court that the off duty officer was at Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) restaurant at 9 p.m. on Thursday when he observed a large group of young men gathered on the sidewalk outside the restaurant.

As the off-duty officer watched, two of the men began to fight one another and at one point during the scuffle both men entered KFC.

The officer then approached the two men and identified himself as a Police officer, attempted to separate them and advised them to stop fighting and .

As the two youths continued fighting, the officer detained Benjamin at which time he said to the officer: "Let me go, I don't care if you are a f*****g cop, you will meet your match, licks are coming to you." He was then arrested and taken to Hamilton Police Station.

Benjamin claimed the officer did not identify himself and he took part in the fight in self defence.

Mr. Warner fined Benjamin $600 for fighting in a public place and $1,000 for uttering threatening words.

The other man involved in the fight fled KFC and Police are on the look out for him.
