Toddler suffers cracked skull in traffic accident
A two-year-old girl got a fractured skull because the car it was travelling in was extensively damaged when it crashed into a wall on Harbour Road during morning rush-hour yesterday, Police said.
A spokeswoman from King Edward VII Memorial Hospital said last night the two-year-old was in a stable condition in the children?s ward. Police said it received a report of a single vehicle road traffic collision resulting in injury near Red Hole, Paget, at around 7.50 a.m.
?It appears that the female driver of a black Renault car was travelling west on Harbour Road when she lost control of the vehicle attempting to negotiate a left hand bend,? a Police spokesman said yesterday in a release. The car went over a sidewalk and collided with a wall, causing extensive damage to the vehicle.
Police said the two year old child and the female driver got deep cuts after the crash and were quickly taken to the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital (KEMH) for their injuries.
The driver of the Renault was released from KEMH shortly afterward, however, as of last night the child was still in hospital for observation by doctors.
To assist in their inquiries into the incident, Police are appealing for any witnesses to this incident or anyone with any information to contact P.c. Claude Jean on 299-4538 or the main Police number on 295-0011.
?In addition, the collision resulted in significant delays on both Middle Road and Harbour Road for morning commuters travelling into the City of Hamilton from the west end of the Island,? it said.
For more than an hour after the collision, Police diverted traffic away from that section of Harbour Road, leading to lengthy delays for morning traffic.
