UBP appoints Jon Brunson as joint-deputy leader
Next time you see a line-up of the United Bermuda Party?s leaders don?t be surprised if you find yourself doing a double-take ? because the Opposition has elected itself two deputy leaders.
An arrowhead formation has been created with leader Dr. Grant Gibbons at the head of the Party flanked by two equal deputies, the re-elected Michael Dunkley and the now elevated Shadow Minister of Youth and Sports Jon Brunson.
It is a return to the days leading up to the 2003 general election when the UBP operated informally with two deputy leaders.
The Party liked the feel of the unusual fit back then and the following year decided to amend its constitution to make it possible to have two secondary commanders.
?Jon brings a fresh voice, a new approach, and enthusiasm for serving our country and our people,? said UBP Chairperson Gwyneth Rawlins as she announced the new look leadership.
Party leader Dr Gibbons praised his new deputy, commenting: ?He represents just one of the strong, capable and qualified potential leaders within the ranks of the UBP.
?The men and women who make up the UBP team are a rich, diverse mix that represents 21st Century Bermuda.?
Father-of-two Mr. Brunson works as human resources and development manager for Orbis Investment Management Limited.
The tri-athlete and marathon, who has previously been a director of the Bermuda Society of Arts, President of the Bermuda Gymnastics Association and a former member of the CedarBridge Academy Board of Governors, said he had worked with leaders such as Sir John Swan, Quinton Edness and C.V. ?Jim? Woolridge and ?seen first-hand what they did to move this country forward.?
He added: ?I always aspired to serve my country in the same way and now my colleagues have provided me with the opportunity.
?Bermuda is in the midst of trying times with crime on the rise, a worsening housing crisis and many of our people both young and old are struggling.
?I look forward to working through these challenges and with my UBP colleagues helping to lead Bermuda out of these trying times.?
