The United Bermuda Party is calling for a ban on cellphone use while driving.

Shadow Minister of Transport, Jamahl Simmons yesterday said the UBP joined members of the public in thinking that road safety is going ?out of the window?.

He said one of the things the UBP would like to see happen over the next year is the banning of cellphone use while driving.

Mr. Simmons said studies have proved that those who talk on their cellphones will driving are four times more likely to be involved in an accident and while no one in Bermuda has been killed because of this, he said something needed to be done before this happened.

There are 45 countries around the world that have imposed bans on cellphone use while driving, including various states in the US.

He said it was time Bermuda joined these countries and set up more ways of ensuring road safety.According to Police statistics, there have been 1,925 collisions on Bermuda?s roads this year, of which 1,730 were motorcars and 1,055 were motorcycles, compared to 3,078 collisions last year and 2,845 in 2003.
